②need作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞時(shí)只用于否定和疑問(wèn)句中，但作實(shí)意動(dòng)詞可用于肯定、否定和疑問(wèn)句。還有needn’t have done表示過(guò)去本不必要做卻做了某事，有惋惜含義；而didn’t need / have to do一般表示過(guò)去沒(méi)有必要做也沒(méi)有做。如：
Need I finish the job right now？ You need to find a car mechanic.
You needn’t enter all the boys into the race. 你沒(méi)必要讓所有男生參加這個(gè)賽跑。
You needn’t have bought the TV.你當(dāng)時(shí)本不必要買(mǎi)那個(gè)電視。
We didn’t need / have to take a taxi. It took us only fifteen minutes to walk there.我們當(dāng)時(shí)沒(méi)必要打的。走過(guò)去只花了我們十五分鐘。
③should have done表示過(guò)去本應(yīng)該做卻沒(méi)做；shouldn’t have done表示過(guò)去本不應(yīng)該做卻做了。含有責(zé)備的含義。如：
He shouldn’t have shot the robber. She should have turned his request away.
④mustn’t表示 “禁止”，而needn’t表示 “不必要”。對(duì)Must…？的否定回答應(yīng)該是“No，…needn’t或No， …don’t have to. ”而不是“mustn’t”。
3)推測(cè)
①表肯定推測(cè)的情態(tài)助動(dòng)詞按可能性從小到大排列：might， may， could， should / ought to， must；其中might， may， could表示“可能”，should， ought to表示“料想/按常理說(shuō)應(yīng)該”，must表示“肯定，一定”。
②否定推測(cè)可能性從小到大排列為：might not， may not， should not / ought not to， couldn’t / can’t。其中might not / may not意思是 “可能不”，should not / ought not to意思是“料想/按常理不會(huì) ”，“ couldn’t / can’t”表示“不可能”(couldn’t語(yǔ)氣委婉些)。
③這些表事實(shí)推測(cè)的情態(tài)動(dòng)詞都可以表示對(duì)各種時(shí)間的事實(shí)推測(cè)，是哪種時(shí)間取決于情態(tài)助動(dòng)詞后面的主動(dòng)詞形式：
A.情態(tài)助動(dòng)詞+do：對(duì)現(xiàn)在的一般情況或?qū)?lái)進(jìn)行推測(cè)
That man smiled at you. He may know you. 那個(gè)男的朝你笑了。他可能認(rèn)識(shí)你。
Usually Lucy arrives very early， so she shouldn’t / oughtn’t to be late this time. 通常Lucy到得很早，所以她這次不應(yīng)該會(huì)遲到。
B.情態(tài)助動(dòng)詞+ be doing： 對(duì)說(shuō)話時(shí)的行為進(jìn)行推測(cè)
It’s already midnight and all lights are off now. The students must be sleeping. 已經(jīng)半夜了，所有的燈也都熄了。學(xué)生們肯定在睡覺(jué)。
