1). 解釋說明
在英文寫作中，作者為了讓讀者更好地明白一些生僻、晦澀的詞語的意思，一般他們會(huì)在這些詞語的后面附上一些解釋說明的話語，作者常使用一些定義，同位語，定語從句或是破折號(hào)，括號(hào)等進(jìn)行解釋說明，更好地傳達(dá)其意思。例如：
1. Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly.
例1中給予annealing以明確的定義，即"退火，韌煉"。
2. The herdsman , who looks after sheep, earns about 650 Yuan a year.
例2通過一個(gè)定語從句who looks after sheep 來解釋herdsman 的詞義“照顧羊群的人”即“放羊人，牧人"。
3. They traveled a long way , at last got to a castle, a large building in old times.
例3中同位語部分a large building in old times 給出了 castle 的確切詞義，即"城堡"
4. We are on the night shift——from midnight to 8 a.m.——this week.
例4句子中的兩個(gè)破折號(hào)之間的短語很清楚地表明一個(gè)時(shí)間段，結(jié)合題干的信息，我們很容易推斷出night shift 是"夜班"的意思。
有時(shí)，作者為了讓自己的意思表達(dá)得更加準(zhǔn)確，他們有時(shí)候會(huì)針對(duì)同一個(gè)意思使用多種不同的表達(dá)方式來進(jìn)行解釋說明。例如：中公教育提供
1. It will be very hard but also very brittle, in other words, it will break easily.
從后面的解釋break easily, 我們可以了解到brittle 是"易碎的"的意思。
2. Spontaneously, that is, without planning, the students lifted the teacher onto their shoulders.
從 that is 這個(gè)信號(hào)詞 可 以 分 析 出 “without planning” 就是 spontaneously 這個(gè)詞的詞義 “無計(jì)劃的，自發(fā)的 ”
常用的一些標(biāo)志性詞有：or, in other words, that is to say, that is, i.e., to put in another way 等
2). 舉例說明
為了表達(dá)清楚某一抽象詞匯的詞義， 有時(shí)作者會(huì)使用一些例子來進(jìn)一步說明一些生詞的意思。我們可以通過弄清事例來幫助我們推斷出生詞詞義
常用的舉例說明的信號(hào)詞有for example, for instance, like, such as, as, just as, include /including, similarly, especially, specially。 例如：
1.Some ships carried cargo like coal，oil and military supplies，while others carried only passengers。
根據(jù)like后面列舉的coal，oil and military supplies，及與后面passengers相對(duì)的可知，cargo指的是貨物。
2. The little boy enjoys all kinds of beverages, such as milk, cola, coffee, juice, and tea.
從 such as 引出的例子“milk, cola, coffee, juice, and tea”， 可以看出是對(duì) beverages 具體化說明 ，都屬于飲料的范疇，由此可猜出 beverages 是“各種飲品的總稱”。
